Spirit of Hispania opens on April 20
Bewitched lovers, animals that speak, mystery, magic and more. It may sound like something out of the Brothers Grimm but these are tales from Mexico and Central America. In Iowa River Players spring production of “Spirit of Hispania” four traditional stories from Latin American cultures are brought to the stage. “Maria” is a tale of a mismatched couple who tragically rely on a witch’s black magic to bring them together. “The Baker’s Neighbor” a poor man has his day in court. In “The Rabbit Who Wanted to Be a Man” and “Repaying Good With Evil” actors play animals that are all too human in Aesop’s Fable type stories.
The ensemble of actors are from Belmond, Clarion, Dows and Hampton: Melanie Mayberry, Micheala and Nick Henricks, Elizabeth Korth, Jon and Becky Ahrendsen, Zach Reed, Karen and Mariah Smith, Steve Froehlich, and Grace Ritter.
This is the first production in the 13th season at Iowa River Players. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available at the door. Alternatively, season tickets are available at Steve’s PC Clinic in Belmond or at the Clarion Public Library for just $25.
Production dates are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 20, 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29. Sunday performances are 2:00 matinees. All other performances begin at 7:30.
“Eat It Up To Heat It Up”
To whet the cultural appetite, a Mexican dinner in the lower level of the theater will be offered on the evening of April 21, serving from 5:30 to 7:00. Proceeds from the $10 a plate dinner will help fund a new radiant heating system in the seating area of the theater. For more reservations (preferred) call Shannon Walker at 515-851-8487.
